A new solution to the homeless crisis is being built in just under 4 weeks for €20,000. The converted 20ft container will accommodate one person as a mobile sleeping pod with ensuite that can be located around the country at short notice.
The project has been designed by Ceardean Architects who previously designed the “Ripple Container Home” a two bed unit made from a 40ft Container which was donated last year to SVDP and is now in use as an emergency housing unit.
Colaiste Dhulaigh College of Further Education Raheny (CDCFE) are building the project as part of their Education Programme integrating Interior Design, Renewable Energy and Sustainable Construction, Architecture Design and Technology, Graphic Design and Media Departments. CDCFE will prepare a free e-book illustrating the project and it is intended that they will continue to construct a sleeping pod each year.
The construction of the project over the following weeks can be followed on facebook “Container Build”. The project are actively seeking a charity to host the new sleeping pod.
Speaking about the project, Mr Trenaman of Ceardean Architects said:
“This project is about making a low cost solution to getting people off the street and empowering them with some privacy and space to rebuild their lives”
